3 Poems by A.J. Huffman

I Am Darkness

descending, a veil in shades
of mourning sent to shadow
somber eyes.  I am deceptive
depths consuming stars.
I am empty
expanse, a hollow space.  The distance
between two points is through
me.  I am blind
fear, the frame that holds all things
going bump or shattering in the night.

Beyond the Rainbow
after Somewhere Over the Clouds, artist Osnat Tzadok

there is another world, all white
innocence billowing in fluffy
configurations.  It emulates images
of reality, puffed into king-size cotton-
field proportions of improbability.
Metaphors in motion shift
wind and viewing
perspective.  Pirate ship drifting into
bountiful fruit basket, shifting into
bud vase, dissipating into lone feather
following line of sun, as everything melts,
becomes one with horizon’s line.

Frozen

One
second
captured in force-
ful breath, winter’s bitter
wind.  Natural
tear suspended in un
                                 drop.  Diamond-
like, its testimonial reflects
absence, untouched white
expanse, a season’s blight.
